Update on Trips
We have high hopes that we will be able to offer a variety of bus trips and trips to major resorts in the 2021-2022 season. Watch this page for updates.
We did not hold any trips in the 2020-2021 season. This was a hard decision, but current restrictions on travel, lodging, and dining have made group trips all but impossible.
Our trip leaders worked hard to come up with workable solutions, but in the end we had to give up. We had planned trips to Telluride, Colorado and to Mt. Snow, Vermont. We faced obstacles for both trips, but the final blow came when we learned that both locations had restrictions allowing only families from the same households to share condos. Those restrictions, combined with concerns over travel safety, dining restrictions, and rules preventing après ski group gatherings, made the trips impractical.
We also discussed driving trips to nearby resorts in New York and Pennsylvania. We knew that those states required visitors to quarantine for up to 14 days after entering before going out in public, but we were encouraged by reports that New York allowed out-of-state visitors to enter if they stayed for less than 24 hours. On further investigation, however, we were not able to verify that the exception existed. The travel advisory issued by the New York Department of Health is written in a confusing way, but on careful reading we realized that the 24-hour exception applied only to New York residents who travel out of the state for less than a day. There is no exception for out-of-state residents traveling into New York, except for residents of adjacent states. The exceptions appear to be intended to allow workers to cross state lines while commuting to or from work or performing their work duties.
As a result, we are not organizing any out-of-state driving trips, and we are advising all skiers against traveling to New York or Pennsylvania. The ski resorts have informed us that they do not check whether travelers have complied with the restrictions, but travelers do face potentially large fines if they are caught. Should more information be forthcoming that would change our position, we will pass that along to SSC members.
